How Do Geological Structure and Biological Diversity Relate? Benthic Communities in Boulder Fields of the Southwestern Baltic Sea

Abstract Environmental factors shape the structure and functioning of benthic communities. In coastal zones southwestern Baltic Sea, boulder fields represent one most productive habitats, supporting diverse communities that provide many ecosystem services. this study, influence geological characteristics on biodiversity associated hard-bottom was investigated at two different spatial scales (few kilometers tens kilometers). The analyses overall richness (taxonomic functional) community composition revealed how: (i) locally size boulders (ii) regionally site-specific like density distribution sediment can act as environmental driving forces. assemblages shown to increase with increasing surface area boulders, by up 60% for species 40% functional richness. At both scales, differences in compositional variability (? diversity) were detected. Locally, smallest hosted more variable diversity 2 times higher), while regional level, indications a larger habitat heterogeneity featuring highest ? observed. This study exemplifies how field obtained information could be considered assessment strategies, order avoid misclassifications habitats naturally limited biodiversity, making step forward desired objective protecting, conserving, managing other comparable sites.
